SMETHPORT — A Bradford man pleaded guilty Thursday in McKean County Court for allegations he failed to get prompt medical treatment for his 3-month-old child.
Jonathan J. Burke, 25, of Bradford, pleaded guilty to a charge of endangering the welfare of a child, a third-degree felony.
District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer said that in December 2018, the mother of Burke’s 3-month-old child, Alana Dinch, threw a chair at him. The chair bounced off him and struck the infant in the head.
The baby suffered head and face injuries, and “her head was described as ‘squishy,’” Shaffer said.
Despite the injuries, it wasn’t until Dec. 19 that Burke notified another person of the injuries, and he and the other person took the baby to the hospital.
Shaffer said the baby suffered injuries at the hands of her mother on at least three occasions between Dec. 5 and 19 in 2018, and she described the injuries.
However, Burke said he was only aware of the injuries that occured on the third occasion when Dinch threw the chair — around Dec. 17 — as he was working full time. Shaffer accepted Burke’s assertion for the purpose of the plea.
Injuries the infant suffered between Dec. 5 and 19 included a brain hemorrhage, skull fracture and scalp hematomas. Some of the injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
A charge of recklessly endangering another person against Burke was withdrawn in light of the plea. A trial that was scheduled for Feb. 18 has been canceled.
Burke will be sentenced at 1 p.m. March 19.
Dinch is serving three to six years in state prison after pleading guilty to a charge of aggravated assault under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life.
Burke is free, having posted $50,000 bail.
