SMETHPORT — Smethport used a strong defensive effort and balanced scoring to edge North Tier League foe Northern Potter, 52-36.
The Hubbers (8-7, 7-5) jumped out to a 10-2 lead after the first quarter before leading 25-14 heading into halftime. From there, Smethport outpaced the visiting Panthers 27-22.
Key to that defensive performance? Limiting NoPo’s Ryan Langworthy, who had scored in double figures in five of NoPo’s past six games, to just three points.
“We tried to play really good, aggressive team defense,” said Smethport coach Jay Acker. “Holding them to two points in a quarter is always a good thing. It shows we were helping on defense and playing like we were supposed to play.”
Leading the Hubbers on the other end of the court were Layne Shall and Connor Alfieri. Shall registered 16 points, the most he’s put up since Jan. 8’s contest against Austin, while Alfieri added 10. Richie McDowell (8 points) pulled down 10 rebounds, and Alex Ognen also scored eight on the night.
The Hubbers hit seven 3-pointers on the night, the most Smethport has made in a game this season, according to Acker.
“We had a lot of guys tonight that performed very well,” Acker said. “We had two guys in double figures and two others scored eight. That’s pretty good, and a lot of others didn’t score a lot but contributed for us.”
Northern Potter (6-10, 3-9) was paced by Carter Anderson’s 22 points. It was the second consecutive game the guard has scored at least 20.
