The staff of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s literary magazine, Baily’s Beads, will kick off the new decade by revealing their 25th edition of the magazine at the annual magazine celebration Wednesday evening.

The celebration will be held in the Mukaiyama University Room of the Frame-Westerberg Commons and will take place at 7:30 p.m. It is free to the public and will include complimentary refreshments, prizes, and an open mic.

The 2020 edition is meant to serve as “something of a callback to the rich history of our region, school, and country,” Taylor Tarahteeff, editor-in-chief and an interdisciplinary arts major from Bradford, wrote in his editor’s note.

The issue features a huge selection of pieces that vary from poetry to speculative and realistic fiction stories to even a critical essay on artificial intelligence.

In addition to Tarahteeff, staff members include Hannah Ruttan; Kurtis Chapman, a general studies student from Bradford; Amanda Little, an interdisciplinary arts major from Bradford; Courtney Clever, an interdisciplinary arts major from Warren; Sadie Fox; Jess Jordan, an interdisciplinary arts student from St. Marys; Briana Henry, a 2019 graduate; Emily Little, a general studies student from Bradford; Rachel Close, a communications major from Bradford; Emily Miller, an English Education 7-12 major from Bradford; Michaelah Hatcher, an English education 7-12 major from Bradford; Ja’aden Humphries-Randolph, an interdisciplinary arts major from Pittsburgh; and Alayna Seggi, an English Education 7-12 major from Erie.

Faculty advisors were Dr. Nancy McCabe, professor of writing and director of the writing program; Rick Minard, instructor of art; Anna Lemnitzer, director and assistant professor of the art and interdisciplinary arts program; Dr. Josh Groffman, assistant professor of music; and professors Dr. Tracee Howell, director of the composition program and writing center and Katherine Kula, assistant director of the writing center.

The celebration will also recognize the first place with special merit award the 2019 issue received from the American Scholastic Press Association as well as the award for Best College Magazine. It is the sixth time that Baily’s Beads has won that award.
