Smethport Area Women’s Club
SMETHPORT — The Smethport Area Women’s Club held their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday at the American Legion Hall in Smethport. There were 16 members present.
President Barb Peterson called the business meeting to order after dinner. The minutes from the October meeting were approved with corrections and additions. There was no meeting in November. The December Christmas party was enjoyed by all. The treasurer, Phyllis Faes, gave the treasurer’s report.
There was one announcement: The Bradford Pavilion needs walkers. Anyone who has a walker that he or she is not using or knows someone who does, the Pavilion has patients that need them.
New member Joan Schultz was introduced and welcomed to the group.
The group will participate in the annual Easter egg hunt. The club’s donation will be $100. The hunt will be at 1 p.m. April 11 at Hamlin Lake Park.
The club held election of officers, with the following women elected: president, Barb Peterson; vice president, Carol Duffy; secretary, Joanne Colton; and treasurer, Phyllis Faes.
Women’s Literary Club
The Women’s Literary Club met Friday at Bradford Regional Medical Center for the annual hospital luncheon. President Patti Neidich presided over the business meeting.
Lists of recommended books from the club’s previous meeting — with the theme “Sharing Good Books” — were distributed.
Judy Yorks, Nancy Miller and Lois Schultz were selected as the nominating committee for the upcoming election of officers, which will be held Feb. 21.
The president congratulated Cheryl Bazzoui, who writes under the pseudonym Ann McCauley, on her recent honor in the Shelf Unbound Best Indie Book Competition for 2019.
Patti announced that a board meeting will be held at 1:15 p.m. Jan. 24. Members were reminded that the Valentine’s Tea will be held on Feb. 7 with the guests from the Current Events Club.
Francie Ambuske greeted guests and welcomed them to lunch served by the hospital kitchen. After lunch Stacy William, director of volunteer services and community Outreach, introduced Melissa Sullivan, chief administrative officer, who presented a program on the challenges and concerns of health care at BRMC.
Although the maternity ward has been transferred to Olean (N.Y.) General Hospital, women can still receive prenatal care here in Bradford. There are many challenges for rural hospitals and BRMC has met the challenge with the addition of new doctors. A new family medicine and primary care doctor, Dr. Nerissa Baptiste, was introduced and told her background and medical philosophy.
Jason Nuzzo, Upbeat coordinator, talked to members about the programs at Upbeat, which has been in BRMC since 1989. Upbeat has programs for cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation and wellness programming.
