DUBOIS — After an even first quarter, Wednesday’s District 9 League tilt between the DuBois and Bradford boys basketball teams was a game of runs.
It so happened that the Beavers had the game’s last run. And that was the difference.
Trailing by three points heading into the fourth, DuBois (11-2, 3-1) put up 23 in the final eight minutes to knock off Bradford 54-46 and to hand the Owls their second straight league loss in the process.
After trailing by six (19-13) at halftime, Bradford (7-5, 1-2) outscored the Beavers 21-12 in the third quarter to re-take the lead.
“In the second half we battled back and scored 21 in the third,” BAHS head coach Brian Hobbs said. “Did a real nice job from the foul line. But we had a few miscues that changed the momentum of the game real quick.”
The Owls’ Tyler Gigliotti scored six of his game-high 17 points in that big third quarter, but was limited to just two over the final eight minutes. The senior also added eight rebounds and went 8-for-8 at the free-throw line.
Bradford missed five free-throw attempts in the fourth while DuBois went 7-for-9 at the other end of the court to help seal the victory.
Lennon Lindholm had seven of his 13 points in the fourth quarter and Chase Husted added six of his 14 in the final eight minutes. Nick Felix had three 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 16 for the Beavers.
Peyton Manion contributed nine points and seven rebounds for the Owls, while teammate Caleb Nuzo had six points, three assists and three steals.
Hobbs noted that the Owls were missing two key contributors in the game as both Steve Knowlton and Gavin Piscitelli were out sick.
“Gavin’s been playing really well and shooting really well,” Hobbs said. “Disappointing to find out he was sick… especially to give (Evan) Schmidt a blow. We missed Steve and his energy. He brings some activeness.”
The Owls will hope both players can return for Friday’s D9 League game at Punxsutawney.
Freshman: DuBois topped Bradford 38-29 in the ninth-grade game. Lucas Johnson had 17 for Bradford and Joseph Yost chipped in eight.
