SMETHPORT — A 3-pointer from Sheffield’s Marissa Grubbs was just off the mark as the Lady Hubbers held off a fourth quarter rally from visiting Sheffield and picked up a 31-27 non-league victory Monday night.
Trailing by multiple possessions most of the fourth quarter, the Lady Wolverines worked the score into a 2-point game with eight seconds to play. After a timeout, Sheffield opted for the Grubbs 3-pointer that missed and was rebounded by Sabrinna Tanner.
Tanner then hit both of her free-throw attempts at the other end to clinch the win and snap a two-game skid for the Lady Hubbers (6-6).
The Smethport sophomore had an impressive all-around night on the court with four points, five rebounds, three blocks, three steals and two assists.
Erin Herzog added 13 points for Smethport and MyKayla Deyarmin nine. Deyarmin fouled out with just over four minutes to play in what Lady Hubbers head coach Chad Goodman called “a turning point” in the Sheffield comeback attempt.
Grubbs had a team-high 13 for Sheffield, which fell to 2-9 with the loss.
