The Bradford Area Public Library will host a program at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday about the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s REAL ID requirements.
Beginning Oct. 1, Pennsylvanians will be required to have a REAL ID to enter a federal building or board a domestic commercial flight.
A representative from PennDOT will be available to explain the law and answer questions about the REAL ID. The program is free and open to the public.
The REAL ID Act is a federal law passed by Congress in October 2005. The law established a minimum federal requirement for state-issued identification cards and driver’s licenses to be required to enter federal facilities and military bases or domestic commercial flights. Each state is required to be compliant with this federal law. Until May 2017, Pennsylvania law prohibited PennDOT from complying with this law. Act 3 of 2017, allowed PennDOT to be in compliance with this law and REAL IDs have been available since March 2019. REAL ID’s are not required for voting, driving, visiting the post office, or applying for or receiving federal benefits, such as Social Security or veterans’ benefits.
PennDOT understands that there may be a lot of confusion about the requirements for the REAL ID Act. This event will be an opportunity for the public to have many of their questions answered.
