FEATURED: We enjoy our subscription to Pennsylvania Magazine, and always learn something about our beautiful commonwealth from its pages.
We were happy to see the January/February edition features a story on the Mansion District Suites Inn Bed and Breakfast in Smethport. A sidebar talks about the McKean County Historical Society Museum at the Old Jail, too.
The title of the story is “A Perfect Place: California mother and son start anew in Smethport.”
Holly McCrary’s showpiece B&B is one of more than 40 local properties featured on the Mansion District Walking Tour in Smethport, too.
It’s a nice story promoting some of McKean County’s history. And as always, the magazine features beautiful photos from all across the state.

LOCAL: What would you think the best selling alcohol is in McKean County, at least according to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.
It’s Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum. In number two was Black Velvet Canadian Whisky, followed by Fireball Cinnamon Whisky.
The first two spots are the same for Elk County, but the number three was Jim Beam Bourbon Whisky. In Potter County, Tito’s Handmade Vodka topped the list, followed by Captain Morgan and Jack Daniel’s. Cameron County’s top seller was Captain Morgan, followed by Jagermeister and Crown Royal.
This is all according to Pennsylvania Capital-Star. The information spurred the author to say “Rural Pennsylvania runs on rum.”

MORE: Keeping with an informational trend, we looked to the Center for Rural Pennsylvania for some additional information about the region. There we found a chart listing the top three farm commodity groups in each county for 2017, along with the total value of agricultural sales.
Potter County had the highest agricultural sales figures for the region, with $39.23 million. The top three sellers were milk, hay and cattle & calves.
For McKean County, the total agricultural sales were $5.52 million, with hay, cattle & calves and milk being the top three sellers.
In Elk County, total sales were $4.02 million, with milk, hay and cattle & calves as the top three.
In Cameron County, total sales were $520,000 with hay, cattle & calves and corn as the top three sellers.
The information came from the USDA.
