AUSTIN — Smethport coach Chad Goodman said his team was “flat outplayed” by Austin in their North Tier League matchup Tuesday night.
His Lady Hubbers committed 34 turnovers and went just 1-for-13 from the free-throw line. And though they had a chance to still come away with the win in the game’s waning seconds, it was the Lady Panthers who earned a 23-22 victory over Smethport — their first NTL win since the 2014 season.
Austin’s 23 points were spread out amongst seven players, with Kylie Welsh and Kendra Valenti each tallying five for the Lady Panthers (2-9, 1-5).
Valenti made a layup and the ensuing foul shot to complete the old-fashioned three-point play to give Austin a 23-22 lead with two minutes left. That would be all the scoring for either team.
“We just weren’t able to execute on offense,” Smethport coach Chad Goodman said. “All the credit in the world to Austin; they played a great game tonight and made us force a lot on offense.”
The two wins on the season for the Austin girls are also the most its had since a 6-15 record during the 2013-14 season.
For Smethport (5-5, 4-3) it was the third game this season its had a game decided by one point. The Lady Hubbers were 2-0 in those games coming in. Danielle Nelson had a team-high seven points and delivered the game’s lone 3-pointer.

EMPORIUM — Mikayla Gunn, Rosalyn Page and Sarah Chambers were all in double figures for Coudersport as the Lady Falcons rolled to their sixth consecutive victory.
Gunn led all scorers with 16 points, which included a game-high three 3-pointers. Page added 14 points and Chambers chipped in 10 for the Lady Falcons (7-1, 6-0). After leading by just two after the first quarter, Coudy outscored Cameron Co. 18-2 in the second frame to pull away.
