The five largest commercial airports in Pennsylvania have teamed up together with the Aviation Council of Pennsylvania to create an “easy button” to understanding who needs a Real ID and how to get one.
Utilizing information from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s site as well as the Department of Homeland Security and other resources, users will find concise easy to understand and actionable information to guide consumers through the process of understanding their participation in Real ID. This consistent messaging will be sent to the airports’ email subscriptions as well as their social media platforms. The ability to share this information easily through these platforms will help to get the information to consumers. Currently, there are only a little over 500,000 issued Real IDs.
As of Oct. 1, 2020, if you use a driver’s license to board an aircraft, you will be required to have a Real ID driver’s license. In 2018 over 30 million flights occurred from Pennsylvania’s commercial airports. The concern is too many people waiting to the last minute could result in long waits. Additionally, the identification required to get a Real ID, is not always easily accessible and may take time to locate.
The airports participating in this campaign include: Philadelphia International Airport, Pittsburgh International Airport, Harrisburg International Airport, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, and Lehigh Valley International Airport.
