Ann Esch, who President Patti Neidich referred to as the club’s own Martha Stewart, presented the program, “Appetizers.” All appetizers that were talked about were ones which contained cream cheese.
The first commercial cream cheese was produced by a farmer in upstate New York. In 1880, another cheese maker contracted to distribute this special cheese under the trademark “Philadelphia Brand.” “Philly” cream cheese became Kraft Cheese in 1928 through a merger of Kraft and P. Henix Cheese Co. This cheese was used primarily as a spread for toast, crackers and sandwiches. In 1928 Kraft came out with a recipe book which contained recipes using its cream cheese. Recipes included one for cheesecake, Philly fudge, frosting and one for a clam appetizer dip. The dip was so popular that within 24 hours, New York City was sold out of clams!
Appetizer samples were enjoyed by members following the program. Ann Esch was assisted by her daughter Beth.
Thanks was extended to the Tea Committee consisting of Carol Shannon, Karolyn Graves, Kathy Herzog and Sue Carns.
The next meeting will be held on Dec. 6 at the Bradford Area Public Library. The meeting will be held at 2 p.m., when members will be treated to a program of Holiday Trivia presented by Betty Hach and Gae Colligan.
