DUKE CENTER — The Otto Township Cemetery Association is looking for a few good men. And women.
At the monthly meeting Thursday night, President Sharon Schwab recapped the progress made since its formation a year and a half ago and requested any resident who is willing and able to volunteer for the good of the township.
In addition to physical help in repairing and maintaining the two locations and local knowledge that can assist in correcting and updating the maps, the four positions — president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer — are all two-year terms and will expire at the end of 2020. In addition to more able and willing bodies, financial help is not just welcomed but necessary for the association to continue its work.
Letters will be sent to all those who attended the initial meeting in the fall of 2018 and volunteered to help out. Anyone who does not get a letter but wants to volunteer, should contact Schwab at 558-4973 or Vice-President Kelly Pearce at 966-3234.
It was reported that a trail cam, private property signs and a gate have been installed above the Rixford cemetery to deter ATVs from using the cemetery road for a shortcut. Although this action appears to be unnecessary, the association reported there were some thoughtless individuals who made it necessary. Thus far everyone has obeyed the signs and respected the cemetery grounds. The association hopes there will be no reason to take any legal action in the future.
At the last township meeting, the supervisors agreed unanimously to donate $600 to the cemetery association. This, along with the memorials and donations toward maintenance, has the association on firm financial ground through the remainder of 2019 and into next year. It is their hope that the community continues to support their efforts of honoring the dead and maintaining well-kept cemeteries in both local towns.
