Name: Sierra Campbell
Title/Position: Fire Captain/EMT-B/Vice President
Agency: Derrick City Volunteer Fire Department
Length of time in position: 5 years
What made you decide to become a first responder?
My friend, Stephanie Scrivo! I didn’t even know I was able to join and train as far as I have. Within my first years, I became an EMT-B and Firefighter 1 certified. I think that’s why volunteers struggle so much with numbers, everyone thinks we are paid and go to college to do what we do. For me, this is just a hobby. A very time-consuming (dedication required) hobby that is not for everyone, but I take pride in giving back to my community.
Who is your favorite superhero or super villain and why?
I’m not really into superheroes, but probably Wonder Woman. She shows that not all heroes are men and is an awesome example of how to be fearless.
What is your favorite part of the job?
Helping someone at their worst is probably the most rewarding feeling ever. You don’t even need a thank you to know you did your part in making someone’s day. That in itself makes it worth it.
Tell us about your family and/or pets.
I live with my boyfriend, George, and our three puppies, Oakley, Ollie and Ellie, in Derrick City.
What is one thing you want the community to know about what you do?
We don’t just “fight fires” and “save lives”. Community service & fundraising is a big part of what makes our department successful. We have many fundraisers all year round that our amazing small-town businesses contribute too. We are so thankful for them! We also have our weekly Wednesday night bingo! Come play!
