Twenty teams kicked off the 29th annual competition of the Bradford Businessmen’s Chess League competition, which began on Wednesday evening.

Each team will face every other team in its division during the season, which runs through Feb. 26.

At the end of first-round action at School Street Elementary School, the teams from Hennard’s Construction and E & M Engineers & Surveyors led the varsity division. The junior varsity section has started with a shocking upset of Dr. Gonzalez’s team by Lang Surveying’s team.

Other varsity team rankings at the end of Round 1 are Wood Chiropractic and Main Street Movie House, tied for second place; Main Street Mercantile, third place; Prestige: Watch & Jewelry, fourth place; and A Slice of the ’80s and Mrs. Claudia Caminite, tied for fifth place.

JV teams rankings include Lang Surveying, first place; Prestige: Awards & Engraving, second place; Dr. Wojcik, Pharmacy at Union Square and Williams Agency, tied for third place; American Refining Group Inc., Burns & Burns, Dexter’s Service Center and Hamlin Bank, tied for fourth place; Tasta Pizza, fifth place; and Dr. Mark Caminite and Dr. Gonzalez, tied for sixth place.
