More candy memories: We reminisced about previous chocolate shops on Main Street in a recent RTS and we seemingly missed one.
A Gifford resident called in to share her memories of the local candy shops. She noted we missed one, Fanny Farmer, which was located between Congress and Chamber streets. The store was not open long, according to our caller, but it was located in Bradford at one time.
She also shared memories of visiting Allegrette’s when she was seven or eight and getting BB Bats, a small sucker, as a treat, and of getting candy at Betty Dixon’s to take to the movies when her grandparents took her.
Jim Belardia also called to let us know we missed Fanny Farmer’s candy shop. He explained the block went as follows: Levy’s on corner — a millinery shop and Western union telegraph office, then Fanny Farmer; a small alleyway; Rose Kreinson’s — a ladies clothing store, Jaffy’s clothing store and Producers Bank on the corner.
Meanwhile, Virginia Johnson of Bradford called Monday to share her memories of weekly visits to DeSelle’s when she was around the age of 4 — 6 years old. At that time, she lived in Derrick City.
She explained that she and her mother went grocery shopping every friday and traveled the length of Main Street to reach Olsen’s, which was on the right at the end of the street. On the way, they would stop and get Mrs. Elizabeth Shively a cup of coffee and stop at her store to give it to her. Mrs. Shively was one of Virginia’s mother’s best friends, and during each visit, she would give Virginia a 3-inch disc flat piece of white chocolate, which had whole hazelnuts in it.
“I don’t know whether my mother had to pay for that — but I have the sneaking suspicion that she gave it to me free, since she and my mother were good friends.”
Mrs. Shively and Virginia’s mother both were Elizabeths.
DeSelle’s had chocolate and white chocolate, but there was no dark chocolate at that time.
