Here are some interesting facts about Ouija boards, the Book of the Dead and Tarot cards:
–The “talking board” was first commercially sold by Elijah Bond in 1890. Later, William Fuld took over the operation, and in 1901 started the production of his own boards under the name “Ouija.”
-The automatic writing method used in Ouija boards is found in historical documents of the Song Dynasty in China dating back to 1100 AD.
-According to the scientific community, movement that occurs while using the Ouija board is considered to be the result of the ideomotor response, in which a thought or mental image brings about an automatic muscular reaction, sometimes even without the awareness of the individual.
–The Necronomicon (a.k.a. Book of the Dead) is a fictional textbook of magic appearing in stories written by author H.P. Lovecraft. He said the name “Necronomicon” came to him in a dream.
-The Necronomicon has become a pop culture phenomenon, featured in a multitude of movies including “The Evil Dead” (1981), “Evil Dead II” (1987), “Army of Darkness” (1992), Necronomicon: Book of the Dead (1993) and even hit TV show “The Walking Dead.”
–Tarot cards were originally created to play a game similar to bridge, called triumph. The deck included four suits with cards numbered 1-10, court cards including a queen, king, knight and page, as well as 22 symbolic picture cards not belonging to any suit.
-The first documentation of Tarot cards in a letter from the Duke of Milan in 1440, where he requested several decks of triumph cards to be used at a special event.
-In 1791, followers of the occult in France and England discovered Tarot cards. They saw the pictures on the cards as having more meaning and began using them as a divination tool, referring to them as Tarot.
