EMPORIUM — An Emporium man was killed and several others injured in a three-vehicle accident Saturday in Shippen Township.
Michael S. Smith, 55, of Emporium died in the crash, according to Emporium-based state police.
Police said that at 9:41 a.m. Saturday on Route 120 in Shippen Township, a sport utility vehicle driven by Smith was traveling east on Route 120 by Old West Creek Road, when it crossed the center line into the westbound lane and struck a pick-up truck driven by Christopher J. Hayes, 51, of Kersey, on the shoulder of the road. Smith’s SUV then hit an SUV driven by Kevin Wendel, 56, of St. Marys, then overturned in the center of the road.
Smith was partially ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. He was not wearing his seatbelt.
According to police, Wendel and his two passengers, Patricia A. Wendel, 52, of St. Marys, and Erin L. Gavlock, 31, of Reno, Nev., suffered minor injuries and were transported to Penn Highlands Elk for treatment. Police said Hayes was possibly injured but declined treatment.
Assisting on scene were the Cameron County and St. Marys ambulance services and the Emporium Volunteer Fire Department.
