Denise M. Barber, a puppy trainer for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, will speak Monday at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford in honor of Disability Awareness Month.

Barber and a canine companion will make their presentation from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Harriett B. Wick Chapel on campus.

Barber will talk about the differences between service, therapy and emotional support animals.

She owns K-9 Connection LLC in Olean, N.Y., and has raised puppies for Guiding Eyes for the Blind since 1994.

Puppy raisers nurture and train a puppy for the first year to 16 months of its life, providing it with ample socialization and teaching it basic obedience before it is ready to be evaluated for potential as a guide dog. Each dog’s formal training takes six to 12 months.

Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a non-profit training organization to provide guide dogs for those with vision loss. Its headquarters and training center are in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and it has been training guide dogs for more than 60 years.
