Smethport Area Women’s Club
SMETHPORT — The Smethport Area Women’s Club held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday at the American Legion Hall in Smethport.
In attendance were 16 members, including new member Ginny Cooney, and one guest, speaker Dana Spittler.
President Barb Peterson called the business meeting to order after dinner. The minutes from the September meeting were approved as read. The treasurer, Phyllis Faes, gave the treasurer’s report.
Carol Duffy passed out Christmas candy order forms. The forms are due back to Duffy on Nov. 1, and members will be able to pick up their candy at Patty Witchen’s home on Nov. 21. Witchen will call members when their candy is ready.
There will be no meeting in November. The next meeting will be the club’s Christmas party at 6 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Legion Hall in Smethport. Attendees are to bring a $10 exchange gift, paper products or personal care items for the food bank, and a $5 donation for The Era’s Less (ELF) Fund. They will have a stuffed chicken breast dinner.
The winner of the monthly drawing was Dinah Gallegos.
The business meeting was adjourned at 7:04 p.m.
Guest speaker Spittler is the assistant fire chief of the Smethport Fire Department. He is also chairman of the Essential Emergency Support Training Program Advisory Board, which operates locally through the Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center in Port Allegany. This program trains high school students in grades 10, 11 and 12 in the essentials of firefighting and being an EMT.

On Wednesday, PYOGA met at the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel in Celoron, N.Y.
Guest speaker was David Stein of Assured Partners. He told the group how he started in the insurance business many years ago. He commonly picks up oil companies as clients, as well as offering various other types of insurance in Jamestown, N.Y., many areas in Pennsylvania and around the country.
Bev Roberts did a demonstration of the “Magic Suitcase” on Saturday at the Penn Brad Museum for Derrick Days. This suitcase shows many by-products that oil can be found in.
Sheryl Carls, Roberts and Pattie Brink attended the convention in Kansas City, Mo. Some of the highlights were touring Millbank Works, the Hallmark Cards Museum, the American Jazz Museum and Union Station. The city is famous for barbecue and water fountains.
Various items were collected for the YWCA Victims’ Resource Center.
The next meeting, to be held Nov. 20, at the Runway Restaurant, will be a closed meeting due to the election of officers. The club is asking members to consider taking an office for the 2020 year.
