AAUW
The American Association of University Women – Bradford Branch met at the Brad Penn Oil Museum for its monthly meeting.
AAUW President Marietta Frank welcomed members, and Isabelle Champlin, vice president of programs and board member of the museum, introduced Bev Roberts, a board member, employee of American Refining Group and member of Desk and Derrick, who discussed the wide uses of oil and the thousands of products that use petroleum in the manufacturing process.
After Roberts’ talk, Sam Slocum, manager of the museum, noted that the mission of the museum, which is celebrating its 50 anniversary, is to preserve the history of the Bradford oil field and honor the people and their families whose lives contributed to making Bradford the “Highgrade Oil Metropolis of the World.” Slocum showed a historic film produced by Kendall, which emphasized the lubricating qualities of the high grade oil produced in the Bradford oil field.
Rounding out the presentation was Tom Miller, president of the board of directors, who explained the magnitude of the discovery of oil in 1871 that made the Bradford oil field one of the world’s most productive oil fields in the world. He noted that the museum will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Bradford oil field in 2021.
A brief business meeting followed the presentation. Frank thanked the presenters from the Penn Brad Oil Museum and the hospitality committee, which included Joyce Jordan and Marietta Frank. Terri Leven provided the treasurer’s report and shared a letter from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford thanking AAUW for its endowed scholarship.
A Nominating Committee comprising Faye Parisella, Madeline Miles and Isabelle Champlin was formed to identify candidates for four officer positions.
It was announced that the annual Empty Bowls and Baskets Dinner will be held on Nov. 20 at Pitt-Bradford. Food, hygiene products and monetary contributions were collected for the Bradford YWCA. Marietta Frank reminded members that there will be a board meeting on Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Nazarene.
