HOUTZDALE — A Potter County man serving time in state prison in Clearfield County was found dead in his cell Tuesday.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Gerald Bowman, 70, of Coudersport, was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 9:34 p.m. on Tuesday. Officers and medical staff immediately responded to the scene and began performing CPR.
According to reports, Bowman was taken to the prison’s medical department where CPR continued, then taken by ambulance to Mount Nittany Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:24 p.m. by the Medic Command Physician.
Pennsylvania’s State Police Barracks at Clearfield will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Clearfield County Coroner’s Office.
Bowman had pleaded guilty in March in Potter County Court to a third-offense DUI, resisting arrest and careless driving.
He was serving 10 months, 15 days to 8 years in state prison. He had been at SCI Houtzdale since Aug. 13.
Facility staff has notified the inmate’s next-of-kin.
