A Kane man has been charged with forgery and theft for allegedly paying his landlord with counterfeit checks from someone else’s account.
Curtis Haight, 64, of Kane, was charged with two counts of forgery, second-degree felonies; one count each of bad checks and theft of services, first-degree misdemeanor; and one count of bad checks, a summary offense.
According to court records, Haight issued two checks for a total of $1,095 to his landlord to pay rent and late fees. However, when the landlord deposited the checks into his account, the bank was notified the checks came from another person’s account and were counterfeit. The landlord attempted to reach Haight to make good on the checks, but Haight did not respond, the records alleged.
Haight was arraigned Monday before District Judge David Engman in Kane and released in lieu of $2,500 unsecured bail. He is scheduled to appear in Central Court Oct. 10.
