SMETHPORT — Following a one-day trial Monday in McKean County Court, an East Smethport man was convicted of threatening people with a machete and strangling a woman in April 2018.
Mark Carlson, 47, was convicted of strangulation, aggravated assault, three counts of recklessly endangering another person with a deadly weapon, two counts of terroristic threats with a deadly weapon used and one count of simple assault, according to McKean County District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer.
“The crimes stem from the defendant’s actions on April 6, 2018 in East Smethport,” Shaffer said. “The charges were filed by Trooper Nicholas Anderson of the Pennsylvania State Police. Assistant District Attorney Ashley Shade prosecuted the case on behalf of the commonwealth. Sentencing will occur in November.”
At the time of his arrest, state police said they had been dispatched to Carlson’s home for a domestic dispute involving a weapon. Carlson had fled the scene when police arrived.
The victims told police that Carlson had threatened to kill them with a machete and strangled one of them, according to the criminal complaint in the case. Carlson had been swinging a machete inside the house, and had grabbed a woman by the throat and squeezed her throat until she was unable to breathe, the complaint read.
