BUFFALO, N.Y. — Sarah Batt, Class of 2020, of Eldred, Pa., participated in a two-week medical immersion trip to Costa Rica as part of the pre-health program at Canisius College.
Batt was one of 16 Canisius students who traveled with Allyson Backstrom, PhD, director of the Dr. George E. Schreiner ‘43 Pre-Medical Center. The group helped set up free popup clinics and also conducted public health home visits to provide care for refugees from Nicaragua and people indigenous to Costa Rica. Now in its ninth year, the annual medical immersion is a unique opportunity for students to develop cross-cultural sensitivity while gaining practical experience. “Students get to directly interact with patients and learn their stories,” Backstrom explained.
