SMETHPORT — Smethport Borough Council received an update Tuesday about the improvements underway at George Murray Memorial Field, the baseball field where three baseball teams play their home games.
In a report to council, Ryan Yingling, chairman of council’s parks committee, said that the contractor, Athletic Field Pros of Pittsburgh, began weather-dependent reclamation work of the infield last Monday.
“A lot of work was done by that evening,” Yingling noted. “So far, the old top layer has been removed, the area regraded and a drainage system has been installed in left field and the infield at the facility where the Smethport Hubbers, Smethport American Legion and Crosby American Legion teams play.”
Remaining to be done are putting down the sod and top mix for the infield.
“While this work will last longer than expected due to the weather, the project’s costs will remain the same,” Yingling added.
In other news, council agreed to meet the borough’s 2020 minimum municipal obligation to two employees’ pension plans. A payment of $10,512 will be made to the Police Pension Plan, and $53,091 is to be made to the General Employees’ Pension Plan.
Council also approved a request from the McKean County Republican Committee, a non-profit organization, to waive the fee for a pavilion in Hamlin Lake Park for a picnic.
After hearing a resident’s concerns about flooding problems, council pledged to have borough employees investigate the matter.
