OLEAN, N.Y. — A new student veterans’ lounge at Jamestown Community College’s Olean, N.Y. campus will be dedicated in honor of the late Fred Moricca at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
The dedication is free and open to the public. At its August meeting, JCC’s board of trustees adopted a resolution to rename the space, which is located on the second floor of the College Center building. The room has been outfitted with furnishings purchased by members of Club Valor — JCC’s student group for veterans.
Moricca, who died unexpectedly in 2017, served as a counselor at JCC preparing graduating students to enter the workforce. He also established Club Valor to provide additional support to veterans in their transition from military life to college. A graduate of St. Bonaventure University, where he served in the ROTC, Moricca enlisted in the Army as a second lieutenant for four years. He was honorably discharged with the rank of captain.
Moricca joined JCC’s staff in 2004 after completing a 34-year tenure as an employment counselor with the New York State Department of Labor. He received the JCC President’s Award for Excellence in 2016 for his achievements as an adjunct faculty member.
