A Genesee woman was killed in a fire that started late Friday night in her Potter County home.
Helen M. Matteson, 86, died as a result of the blaze, Coudersport-based state police Trooper Kyle Wagner reported.
According to Wagner, about 11:30 p.m. Friday, state police were dispatched to the scene of a working structure fire at 48 Rose Lake Lane, Allegany Township. Fire Marshal Tyler Watson from the Pennsylvania state police was also brought in to assist in the investigation.
Potter County Coroner Kevin J. Dusenbury pronounced her dead.
Dusenbury said, “Heroic efforts were made by her son, Timothy, and grandson, Jon Inzana, to save her. Upon entering the residence, they discovered her and immediately brought her out. Unfortunately, she was deceased at that time.”
The coroner said Mrs. Matteson died due to smoke inhalation.
Dusenbury said his “family and office extend their deepest prayers to the family.”
No cause for the fire has been released, but Wagner said the investigation continues.
The following fire departments responded: Genesee, Shinglehouse, Ulysses, Coudersport, Whitesville, N.Y., and Willing, N.Y.
