The visitors appeared to be happy with the delicious food, juggling, antique cars and art show, while staff at Bradford Ecumenical Home were happy the rain held off during the facility’s 30th anniversary celebration Thursday.
The event, which was attended by several hundred people, provided barbecue chicken dinners and dessert for Ecumenical Home and Chapel Ridge residents, as well as their friends, relatives and community members.
“We’re going to have a full house, I’m sure,” said Lisa Johnson, executive director of the Ecumenical Home, moments before the event kicked-off. “We’re just excited to have all the people from the community and our residents’ families — it’s a nice event to bring people together.”
One family that brought their youngest members to the event were the descendants of Ecumenical Home resident Bonnie Titus — whose quadruplet great-grandchildren attended the gathering.
While getting the four 2-year-olds to visit with their great-grandmother for a few minutes without squirming was a challenge, Titus appeared to enjoy seeing her little ones.
Titus’ daughter, Connie Johnson, said the quadruplets are the children of Stacie and Randy Titus of Bradford, and the grandchildren of her brother, Jack Titus.
Johnson said her mother, who had been a school bus driver, had lived in a home in Bradford with her late father, Jack Sr.
“As a matter of fact, she drove Lisa (Johnson)” to and from school, Johnson said of her mother’s early connection with the executive director.
For her part, Lisa Johnson said she remembers Titus as her bus driver during her middle school years and that she was a kind person.
“I have some good memories” of that, Lisa Johnson said.
During the celebration, an out-of-the-ordinary activity that took place was the Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event that was held in conjunction with the anniversary.
Britt Watson, membership coordinator for the Chamber, said participating in the celebration was “definitely different, which was great for the Ecumenical Home.
“They had a beautiful turnout,” Watson said of the picnic. “It’s such a great place.”
On a final note, Lisa Johnson said that following the anniversary events, the facility will embark on an expansion off of the dining room to benefit residents and staff.
“It’s an expansion project for Bradford Ecumenical Home so we can expand our resident restroom space, our employee access into the building and our activity area,” Johnson explained.
“That project hopefully will be started soon, we got delayed with our Department of Health regulations and their review process,” she continued. “But we’re absolutely pushing forward with that.”
