Bill Lord and Sue Townsend, representing the Smethport Senior Center, were named Senior King and Queen Thursday afternoon during Senior Citizens’ Day at the McKean County Fair, which was sponsored by Northwest.
Emily Gustafson, the current McKean County Fair queen, and the five candidates for the queen’s title Saturday night, sang the Star-Spangled Banner and read the senior king and queen candidates’ resumes.
Instrumentalist Jim Ronan provided the music before and following the announcements of the king and queen.
Lord was a supervisor at Ethan Allen for 38 years prior to retiring. He has been a fair board member since 1986, serving as treasurer and a major fundraiser. A member of the senior center since 2015, he has volunteered as a fundraiser.
At the senior center, Townsend attends the HSIM Exercise Group, and as a trained instructor, she teaches Bob Ross painting classes there. She is licensed as a scuba diver. She and her husband, Herman, a Vietnam veteran, have been married 47 years and reside in Smethport.
Tyler Winner and Elise Elderkin of the Smethport branch office of Northwest, presented the king and queen with their sashes, crowns and plaques shaped like Pennsylvania that also included a clock. All candidates received flowers.
