SMETHPORT — The Smethport Area School Board acted on numerous personnel matters Monday.
Prior to the directors voting on filling vacancies, president Larry Dennis read a statement that indicated any new hires must be compliant with Act 168 of 2014.
The directors then immediately approved the hiring of Malari Lapp as a high school English teacher and Jamie Teribery as an elementary teacher for the 2019-20 school year. Both will be at Step 1 on the salary schedule. Brittany Rose was approved as a special education emotional support aide, also for the new school year.
Letters of resignations were accepted from Roxanne Page, secondary art teacher, and Denise Hale, cafeteria employee.
Superintendent David London was authorized to appoint a high school art teacher for the 2019-20 school year with subsequent board approval in September.
Margaret Hewitt was approved as a part-time cafeteria worker for 2019-20.
In yet another personnel item, directors appointed Shawna Wolfgang as a long-term substitute for the new school year to fill absences in regular and special education classrooms at Step 1 of the salary schedule.
Stacey Crowley and Colby Austin were approved as mentor teachers for the new high school and elementary teachers, respectively.
Since the board defeated a motion to OK a temporary Dean of Students position for 2019-20 at a stipend of $4,000, no action was taken on approving its job description.
High school music teacher Matt Bailey will work an additional five contract days preparing district data for the Pennsylvania Information Management System, which will be submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Education multiple times throughout the calendar year.
Directors also approved:
*London’s 2019 superintendent’s evaluation and satisfactory attainment of the Objective Performance Standards, as well as approving the Objective Performance Standards for 2019-20;
*a proposal from School Webmasters to redesign and maintain the district’s website at a fee of $11,934;
*the purchase of copies of a new high school textbook, “Marketing Dynamics,” for grades 10-12 at a cost of $4,011.15; and
*the installation cost for the football scoreboard at a cost of $8,200 to be paid from the capital projects fund.
The board also voted to accept gift donations from the classes of 2016, 2017 and 2018 to help with the cost of the new gymnasium scoreboards in the amount of $3,863.69. Greg Rounsville, district maintenance supervisor, informed the directors that these scoreboards have been installed,and tested, and are now operational.
