RIDGWAY — The Ridgway Area School District was hit with an electronic virus on July 30, but district officials say no student data was compromised.
This virus encrypted (locked) network servers and files, limiting access to users. There was no personally identifiable or confidential data extracted or breached.
The student information system and parent portal were not affected, officials said.
The district staff immediately reported this electronic viral attack to local law enforcement, the state attorney general’s office, and the Department of Homeland Security.
All available resources have been utilized to assure minimal disruption to the opening of the 19-20 school year.
An investigation is ongoing at this time and being led by special agents and certified forensic investigators from the Department of Homeland Security.
According to various agency alerts, this is a national cyber security issue as several other school districts, police departments, and municipalities were attacked nationally, by the same virus within the past two weeks.
