SMETHPORT — Smethport Borough Council took steps Monday to begin seeking applicants for two municipal positions.
Council appointed Matt Dart, the borough’s working maintenance supervisor, to prepare a job description for wastewater plant operator and borough secretary-treasurer Melody DeLuca to do likewise for the part-time utility clerk. Dart and DeLuca are then to meet with council’s personnel committee to discuss the descriptions, and if there is agreement, the positions will be advertised without a full council vote.
In another vote, council gave Dart the OK to mill and fill several sections of streets on the south side of town for $11,000.
Councilman Ryan Yingling reported that work on improving the infield at George Murray Memorial Field is to begin during the last week of this month and is expected to take about two weeks. According to Yingling, the company is to do a complete reclamation of the infield, which includes putting down new sod and installing a new drainage system.
Council received three bids for removing 66 tree stumps and restoring the areas. In a unanimous vote, council agreed to award the project to Darcy Knapp of Port Allegany, who submitted a quote of $6,500, provided he has the proper insurance. If not, council will accept the bid of $8,000 from Ken Boleen.
During the “Recognition of Citizens Present” part of the agenda, council granted a request from Bart Barton of the Smethport American Legion to have a beer dispenser in a designated area in Hamlin Lake Park on Labor Day during the local observance of the national American Legion’s 100th anniversary, which includes a giant parade.
Council met with solicitor Erik Ross in an executive session for more than an hour to discuss personnel matters. After returning to the public part of the meeting, council, acting on the advice of counsel, ratified the Rule 68 offer.
