BANGOR, Maine — Elk-McKean’s magical postseason run came to an end in heartbreaking fashion Wednesday afternoon.
Playing in the championship game of the East Region, Delaware — which bested Elk-McKean earlier in the tournament — rallied from a 7-1 deficit to win 9-8 in eight innings.
After Delaware tallied a run in the top of the first, Elk-McKean responded with seven runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Carson Whiteman, Kaden Dennis, Domenic Allegretto and Ethan Wells each had an RBI in the first to put E-M in the driver’s seat.
But Delaware’s pitchers settled down and blanked Elk-McKean for the next six frames, setting up its comeback in the process.
Delaware tallied three runs in the third before tying the game on a fly ball in the seventh inning.
It then pulled ahead with two runs in the eighth on the back of two Elk-McKean errors. The usually fine-fielding E-M committed six of them in the game.
Camron Marciniak singled home a run in the bottom half of the eighth to pull E-M within one, but the rally fell short.
Marcinick and Aiden Zimmerman each had three hits in the game for Elk-McKean, which had won five straight after dropping the opening round to Delaware.
Delaware now advances to the 2019 Senior League World Series beginning this weekend in Easley, South Carolina.
