A Bradford man who pleaded guilty last month in two theft cases — including one where he was accused of stealing a car at the start of what turned into a three-county crime spree — was sentenced in McKean County to a state prison term.
Tyler J. Newman, 19, was sentenced Thursday in McKean County Court before Judge Christopher Hauser to one year 30 days to five years in state prison, District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer stated. She said Newman will serve the sentence concurrent to — or at the same time as — a three-to-six-year sentence from Clearfield County.
Court records filed at the time of Newman’s arrest alleged that at 9:05 p.m. Feb. 11, he stole a sport-utility vehicle from the UniMart on Chestnut Street in Bradford and drove to Ridgway, Elk County, where he stole an SUV from Sheetz.
Court records indicated that by 11:51 p.m., Newman was in Lawrence Township, Clearfield County, where he allegedly tried to rob a Sheetz but left without any money; at 12:14 a.m. Feb. 12, in Kylertown, Clearfield County, he allegedly robbed a Kwik Fill at gunpoint, leaving with around $200 or $300, a pack of cigarettes and a lighter.
He was in police custody by 12:58 a.m. Feb. 12.
Newman has already been sentenced for the allegations in Clearfield County. It was unclear at press time what the status of the Elk County case is, but the online court docket indicates the case is still pending.
In the second theft case in McKean County, Newman was accused of stealing items from the men’s locker room at the Bradford Family YMCA, court records stated.
