ST. MARYS — Speakers for the Aug. 9 Students for Life Project in St. Marys will include U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Pa., and state Rep. Matt Gabler, R-DuBois.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. in the St. Marys Area High School cafeteria.
Attending as a special guest will be state Rep. Cris Dush, R-Brookville.
The Students for Life Project is a definitive response by citizens who are concerned about what is happening in our nation regarding the human rights issue of abortion.
Mary Meyer, coordinator for the project, said that Thompson and Gabler, in addition to sharing their personal views, will be addressing what is happening legislatively at both the national and state levels regarding abortion.
The purpose for the Students for Life Project is to bring high school students together to be educated on the human rights issue of abortion and to learn to debate the issue in a reasoned and civil manner. It is our young who will shape the culture of the future. The hope is that it will be a culture that embraces life.
The committee hopes to help establish Student for Life chapters in area school districts and has sought collaboration from area superintendents.
The event will begin with a sign in and distribution of information packets. Coffee and donuts will be served as part of the casual meet and greet. At 9:30 a.m. will be a welcome by Meyer and introduction of the three representatives by Dr. James Wortman, assistant superintendent of the St. Marys Area School District.
After the speakers, a PowerPoint presentation will be given. The slide show addresses these four topics: abortion as a human rights issue, the science of abortion, the competing philosophies of abortion, and the cultural pressures of abortion. The presentation, suitable for all audiences age teen and above, will be made available upon request.
A discussion of how Students for Life chapters are formed and a Q & A session will follow. Lunch will be served compliments of Life Matters, the parent group of concerned citizens of which the Students for Life Project is a sub-committee.
RSVP to Mary Meyer, 335-8019, or Mary Bea Maloney, 834-3834, so that the committee has an accurate count for information packets and to let the committee know if you will be staying for lunch.
