The Sweden Township police chief did not suffer serious injuries when his police cruiser rolled during a rainstorm Thursday afternoon.
Around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Patrolman William Yoder was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in the area of U.S. Route 6 and Promise Lane, Yoder reported on the department’s Facebook page.
Upon investigation, Yoder determined that an unmarked police cruiser driven by Chief Bryan Phelps had been traveling west on Route 6, “when he entered a sudden treacherous rain storm,” the post stated. A large amount of water had pooled on the road, and when Phelps tried to elude the water, the cruiser went out of control, struck and embankment and rolled onto its roof.
Phelps was wearing his seatbelt, according to Yoder.
Phelps declined medical treatment at the scene, but he did receive medical treatment and was released when he went to UPMC to get checked out. Following the police department’s policies, Phelps was screened for alcohol and drugs during the post-accident investigation, said Yoder.
Assisting on scene were Coudersport-based state police, the Coudersport Fire Department and the Coudersport Volunteer Ambulance Association. Yoder noted that motorists offered help, too.
