The retirement of a long-time Foster Township police official was approved during Monday’s meeting of the Foster Township supervisors.
Kevin Shaffer’s notification of intent to retire was received June 27, with a plan to retire officially on Sept. 17 and a final scheduled work day of July 29.
The request was approved, and supervisors made a motion to advertise for and hire a full-time officer prior to the August meeting.
The June activity for the Foster Township Police was reported. For the month, police handled 230 complaints, five motor-vehicle accidents and five criminal investigations. They also issued 23 citations for the month and patrolled a total of 2,806 miles. This led to totals of 1,190 complaints, 45 motor-vehicle accidents, 189 citations and 43 criminal investigations for the year. The total miles patrolled for the year to this point are 23,243.
Beginning July 8, the Foster Township Police will be conducting another campaign against aggressive driving, with cars on detail specifically to watch for these issues.
Foster Township Supervisor George Hocker also noted that police are currently assisting with any code enforcement complaints the township received, as they have not yet hired a new code enforcement officer.
“Anyone with any (code enforcement) complaints should bring them to us,” Hocker said. “We are not leaving them to sit dormant.”
During public discussion, a resident in attendance requested that the owner’s names for each property be included on the Foster Township land mapping currently underway, as per the discussion at the meeting June 20 regarding township ordinance changes.
Hocker noted he would reach out to McKean County commissioners to see about getting permission for that addition, as it is required for inclusion of property owners’ names.
Also, a single bid was received from Mike Amer of Bradford for the purchase of an International Dump Truck owned by Foster Township. The bid, in the amount of $3,100, was accepted.
During the road report, numerous projects were announced as completed during June. These included ditch cleaning on roads including Lafferty Hollow, mowing all road berms and painting arrows on East Main Street.
A motion was made and approved to provide a permit and support for the 4th annual Derrick City 5K Walk/Run. The permit will be provided in the form of a letter, while the support will come in the form of Foster Township Police assistance on the day of the event.
