LEWIS RUN — Allegheny Bradford Corp. laid off 16 employees at the end of last week, in what company officials call a reaction to market opportunities.
Tim Roff, human resources manager at ABC, explained Monday that a reduction in workforce is always a very hard decision for companies.
“Unfortunately, our reduction in force over the last few days was in response to a realignment of our workforce to match our current market conditions,” Roff said.
“Allegheny Bradford Corp. very much appreciates the years of dedicated service provided by the affected employees,” he added.
The ABC workforce now stands at 253 people, Roff said. The layoff only affected various departments at ABC, and not TopLine or Allegheny Surface Technologies.
“We have a lot of positive things being implemented to improve our positions,” he continued. “That includes things like operational excellence, our new enterprise resource planning business management system, and a ‘quality at the source’ initiative, to name a few things.
“Going forward, we will continue to hire employees with the skill sets required for us to take advantage of our current position in the market.”
When asked for more specific information on the cause of the layoffs, Roff said the workers “don’t match where we’re at” in the course of business and changing markets.
“One factor is we fulfilled some skid business and had great outcomes through those, but that business hasn’t carried forward like we’d hoped,” Roff explained. “The emphasis now is more on heat exchangers and filter housings.”
According to its website, ABC “has built a reputation for excellence in manufacturing equipment of the highest quality for sanitary applications such as: heat exchangers, filter housings, tanks, pressure vessels, process systems and custom fabrication in stainless steel and high nickel alloys for pharmaceutical, industrial, food and beverage for end users and OEMs.”
