SMETHPORT — At a special meeting Wednesday, Smethport Borough Council approved the appointment of Melody DeLuca as the new borough secretary-treasurer.
DeLuca replaces Cheryl Putnam. In a June 4 letter, Putnam informed council of her resignation for retirement purposes, effective immediately, and this was accepted.
With all seven council members present, the vote to hire DeLuca was unanimous, and followed a 24-minute executive session to discuss personnel. Her brother, Ryan Yingling, abstained.
Council was back in public session briefly before they met in a brief second executive session. Upon reconvening once again in public session, council cast another unanimous vote, this time approving the hiring of Becky Funk as temporary utility clerk, also effective immediately.
In another vote, council agreed to renew a two-year lease agreement for borough offices with Terry Palmer.
During the public portion of the agenda, Bart Barton, chairman of the “Arts on the Island” event slated for Saturday, informed council about alternate plans for the celebration due to the spring rains and more rain in the forecast. Since the island is too wet, vendors will be located in the parking lot near the tennis courts on the Willow Street side. In addition, Willow Street will be blocked off from the swimming pool to School Street.
The dance along West Main Street is still scheduled for Saturday night.
