COUDERSPORT — A Night Sky Tour is being held Friday at Cherry Springs State Park.
From 8 to 8:45 p.m. people who arrive early for the Night Sky Tour are invited to join park staff at the Night Sky Viewing Area for a free Nature at Night program on fascinating night critters, such as fireflies, bats, black bears or coyotes. Pre-registration is not required.
To preregister for the free Night Sky Tour, visit http://events.dcnr.pa.gov/cherry_springs_state_park.
Stargazing programs are scheduled for June 28-30 at Cherry Springs State Park.
All stargazing and other programs will be cancelled if it rains or there is thunder.
Anyone may observe the night sky at Cherry Springs on his or her own without attending a stargazing program. All visitors should arrive before dark. Search for the Clear Sky Chart online for 48-hour forecasts about viewing conditions.
From 9:30 to 11 p.m. on June 28 and again on June 29 in the Night Sky Viewing Area go on a free Night Sky Tour to experience the splendor of dark skies. Park staff will give a laser-guided tour of the constellations and recount the legends and myths surrounding them. Afterwards, take an up close look at celestial objects through park telescopes. Pre-registration is required.
Gods in the Sky, a Native American Night Sky story, is being offered at 9:15 p.m. on June 28 and again on June 29 to the first who pre-register and prepay — up to a maximum of 16 people per night.
This small group experience with the North Star Outdoor Guides’ Dark Sky Telescope Tours ensures a more individualized program and telescope time. Fee: $20. For details, visit http://events.dcnr.pa.gov/cherry_springs_state_park.
For those planning to attend the June 28 Night Sky Tour program, a free, short guided walk showcasing park facilities will be held by park staff from 8 to 8:45 p.m.
The walk is less than a mile on mostly level terrain. All ages are welcome.
Meet at the information kiosk near the restroom in the visitor parking area on the north side of Route 44. Pre-registration is not required.
