WARREN — Allegheny National Forest will be initiating a five-year non-native invasive plants treatment contract this summer. The first year will have treatments on 24 sites across the Forest.
The following areas will receive a one-time manual herbicide treatment between June 15th and Sept. 1: Economite area; Forest Road 385 and the Beaver Meadows access road and closed campground area.
The following corridors will have Japanese knotweed treatments, which entails a manual cutting in June and then a subsequent manual herbicide treatment in late July or August: State Route 66, State Route 666, Guitonville Road to State Route 3004, Forest Road 577 and Pine Run Road to TR325 at Pine Run.
Non-native invasive plant species are those that are not native to the ecosystem under consideration and whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic, environmental, and/or human harm. Types of non-native invasive plant species found on the ANF are: Invasive honeysuckle shrub (Lonicera spp.); Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica); Exotic Bush honeysuckles (Lonicera tatarica, Lonicera morrowii); Glossy buckthorn (Frangula alnus);
Goat’s rue (Galega Officinalis); Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum); Multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora); Garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) and Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii).
