PUNXSUTAWNEY — Pennsylvania State Police are advising registered sex offenders to be aware of a current attempt to defraud them.
According to state police, individuals who are listed as a registered sex offender are getting telephone calls from individuals claiming to be law enforcement officials. These individuals notify the call recipient that they are not compliant with their registration requirements or that they have a warrant out for their arrest. The caller suggests the registered sex offender arrange a cash transfer in order to resolve the issue.
Police warn that they do not solicit for money in order to gain compliance with registration requirements. Likewise, they will typically make contact by visiting the nearest registration site or the residence of the sex offender.
