RIDGWAY — An Elk County man convicted of stabbing a man to death Aug. 16 at the Duffy Apartments in Johnsonburg will serve 20 to 40 years in state prison.
Harvey L. Detterline III, 38, was convicted March 28 of stabbing Richard Hicks, 29, killing him. The jury found Detterline guilty of murder of the third degree, a first-degree felony.
Court records indicate Detterline was sentenced May 15 before Senior Judge David Grine, who also heard the trial in March.
Throughout the course of the case, testimony showed that Detterline lived in the second floor of an apartment with Hicks and his girlfriend, Brittany Dilley, and her two children. Detterline and Dilley were engaged in a sexual relationship, and on the day of the stabbing, had locked Hicks out of the apartment so they could engage in sex.
Hicks climbed through a second-floor window. Detterline grabbed a knife and went upstairs to confront Hicks. The two fought, and Detterline stabbed Hicks twice. The second stab wound penetrated Hicks’ lungs and heart, causing his death.
St. Marys attorney George Daghir represented Detterline.
Detterline has a hearing scheduled for 2 p.m. June 11. Court records do not indicate the reason for the hearing.
