DUBOIS — Two days after committing three errors and losing a four-run lead in the District 9 Class AA title game, Coudersport bounced back with a nearly flawless performance to keep its season alive.
The Falcons (17-4) jumped out to a two-run first inning lead and tacked on runs from there en route to a 6-2 victory over West Middlesex in the District 4-6-9 sub-regional second place game at Showers Field in DuBois.
The win sets up a date this morning with District 4’s Sayre in the next round of the subregional. The winner of that contest moves onto the first round of the PIAA playoffs Monday.
Kolby VanWhy, Jacob Pitcher and Blake Burgett each had two hits for Coudy, which was the also the beneficiary of some sloppy defense from its opponent this game.
West Middlesex committed three errors in the game, including two in the first inning.
But it was a three-run fourth inning that allowed Coudersport to pull away. The Falcons struck for four consecutive base hits to open the inning and then used a bases loaded walk and a RBI single from VanWhy to tack on insurance runs.
VanWhy also hurled a gem on the mound for Coudersport, striking out four and allowing just six hits over 6.2 innings of work. A.J. Redmond picked up the final out of the game once VanWhy reached his pitch count limit.
Coudersport will have just a few hours to regroup before making the 79-mile trek back to DuBois for today’s game against Sayre. First pitch is set for 11 o’clock.
