At Friday’s Pennsylvania Associated Press Media Editors awards in Harrisburg, Era Assistant Managing Editor Marcie Schellhammer was honored with a first place win for best column writing.

The judges comments on her entries read, “Awesome, slice of life columns that everyone can relate to in some way. Loved these. Great job.”

The entries submitted included columns about reading books, following in her mother’s footsteps, funny words, childhood memories, a mouse in her home and a U.S. Pain Foundation event in Florida.

Schellhammer has been with The Era since 2001, working as a reporter until 2010 when she was named associate editor. She was named assistant managing editor of The Era in February.

She is a graduate of Otto-Eldred High School and of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

She has been honored by the Pennsylvania News Media Association and Pennsylvania Associated Press Media Editors with a total of nine professional awards, three for columns and six for reporting.

She has served as a judge in the Washington and Illinois press associations’ annual editorial contests. She served on a panel discussion at the Bradford Area Public Library on gender discrimination and sexual harassment.

She was honored by the Zonta Club of Bradford on Yellow Rose Day.

She and her daughter, Emily, live in Bradford.

Thirty-nine newspapers and 11 radio and television stations submitted 1,344 entries in the contest. The category in which The Era competes is for 44 smaller daily newspapers in the state.
