MOON: The Farmers’ Almanac tells us there is a blue moon coming up on Saturday.
They tell us that at 5:11 p.m. Eastern Time, May’s Flower Moon turns 100 percent full.
“This particular full Moon is also referred to as a ‘Blue Moon.’ Most people are aware that we usually refer to a ‘Blue Moon’ when we have two full Moons in a month (which happens on average every 2 1/2 to 3 years), but that’s not happening this month, so what’s going on?
“There is an alternate definition for a Blue Moon, which is what this moon on May 18 is.”
The folks at the Almanac tell us that each of the seasons has three full moons — usually. Sometimes a season will have four.
“When that happens, the third full moon of that seasonal lunar quartet is designated as a Blue Moon — although no one is quite sure why the third, and not the fourth, is the one that gets the Blue Moon moniker.”
And no, it isn’t blue anymore than the Pink Moon on April 19 was pink.
The other full moons of spring, which is March 20 to June 21, the Worm Moon was March 20, and the Strawberry Moon will be June 17.
“That final full Moon falls before the summer solstice, so it’s not the first full moon of summer, but rather the fourth full moon of spring. That makes the May 18th moon — the third of the four full Moons of spring — a ‘Blue Moon.’”
MORE: Saturday is also Armed Forces Day, a day dedicated to paying tribute to men and women currently serving in the U.S. military — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.
It is observed annually on the third Saturday of May.
So let us take a moment to say thank you to all of the men and women who serve our country. You have our appreciation. Stay safe.
