The Bradford High baseball team has struggled to have much go its way over the last three weeks.
Wednesday, trailing by one run going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Owls loaded the bases with just one out, but came up empty-handed and visiting Clearfield held on for a 2-1 victory at UPB to send Bradford to its sixth loss in seven games.
“That I would say was the turning point,” said Bradford coach Andy Carlson. “We loaded the bases in the sixth with one out and then hit a fly ball that was caught and our runner was thrown out at home.”
Bradford scored first in the bottom of the first on Mike Gow’s ground out that plated a run for the 1-0 lead.
In the top of the second, the Bison’s Cade Walker drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run and knot the score 1-1.
Clearfield scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth when Hayden Williams drew a walk and used a pair of Bradford errors to score and give the visitors the 2-1 lead for good.
“Overall we played a good game, but just did not hit enough and then we had the errors in the fifth,” Carlson pointed out. “Good points offensively, were Gow with the RBI and a single in the 6th and Peyton Manion going 2-for-3.
Bradford out-hit the Bison 6-3, but Manion, the starting pitcher, took the loss.
“Peyton was around the zone and forced them into weak contact, but we just did not hit enough to back him up,” Carlson pointed out.
The winning pitcher was Hunter Dixon who went the distance for the Bison. He scattered three hits, had four strikeouts and issued just one walk.
Bradford (4-10) returns to action today hosting Otto-Eldred. The Owls will be looking to avenge a 16-1 loss to the Terrors earlier this season.
