SMETHPORT — After 12 seasons, the Smethport Hubbers boys track and field team is back on top of the North Tier League.
The Hubbers captured their first NTL championship since 2007 with a 97-52 victory over Coudersport Tuesday night. With the win, Smethport finished the regular season 10-0 and ride into the postseason with plenty of momentum.
Christian Tanner quadrupled for Smethport in the 800, 1,600, pole vault and 1,600 relay to lead the Hubbers, and Ryli Burritt added a triple in the 400 relay, 1,600 relay and triple jumps.
Smethport also picked up doubles from Darion Gregory (3,200, 1,600 relay), Dalue Burdick (100, 400 relay), Eric Szarowicz (1,600 relay, 3,200 relay) and Justin Gallop (200, 400 relay).
“The boys competed very well today. There were lots of personal records, and I was really proud of the way we competed,” Smethport coach Rick Woodring said. “I’m very happy for the boys. We’ve had a lot of second places (in the North Tier League) over the years, but it was nice to finally get over the hump and see the boys win a championship.”
The victory came on ‘Senior Night’ for Smethport, and Woodring was quick to highlight a few of his seniors, including Gregory, Tanner and Szarowicz. He also pointed out the successes of Brandon Peterson, who won the high jump, and Caleb Lutz, who placed third in the shot put on a personal record throw.
In addition to those seniors, Parker Jack set a personal record in the hurdles.
“We had a lot of best seconds and thirds, and our depth really showed today,” Woodring said.
Coudersport picked up doubles from Logan Rodgers in the javelin and 300-meter hurdles and Cale Ayers in the shot put and discus.
Both teams are back in action this Friday at the North Tier League championships, which will be held at Port Allegany.
