A Rixford man was sent to jail following an arraignment early Thursday on allegations that he assaulted his wife in the parking lot of Bradford Regional Medical Center.
John-Jay Rhodes Jr., 37, of 1077 Looker Mountain Trail, is charged with strangulation, a second-degree felony; simple assault, a second-degree misdemeanor; disorderly conduct, a third-degree misdemeanor; and public drunkenness and harassment, summary offenses.
According to a criminal complaint, about 3 a.m. Thursday, while Rhodes was intoxicated, he argued with his wife, placed a chokehold around her neck and applied pressure to the degree that it impeded her breathing, causing her to fall to the ground. She screamed for help, and her pleas were heard by someone inside the hospital, and hospital dispatch called 9-1-1, the complaint read.
The hospital employee told police she saw Rhodes on top of the victim, with his hands around her neck, the complaint read.
Rhodes was arraigned before oncall District Judge David Engman and remanded to jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in Central Court May 9.
