JOHNSONBURG — For the second day in a row, Cameron County found itself on the wrong end of a walk-off error.
After falling in the opening round of the Elk County Tournament 7-6 at the hands of St. Marys, the Lady Red Raiders (6-7) lost in similar fashion in the consolation game, 9-8, to Johnsonburg (7-5).
Down 8-7 with a full count, two outs and runners on second and third, Johnsonburg’s Mackenzie Freeman drilled a line drive to Cameron County right fielder Sam Mattern. Mattern committed an error on the play, and the tying and winning runs scored for Johnsonburg.
The game was back and forth the entire way. The Ramettes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning before Cameron County roared back with a four-run third to take a 4-3 lead.
Johnsonburg responded with a three-run fourth inning to regain a 6-4 lead, but then Cameron County tacked on two runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to take an 8-6 lead into the bottom of seventh and final inning.
In that half of the frame, Jenna Pavlock tripled to get into scoring position, and then an error on the next play allowed her to score to draw the Ramettes to within 8-7.
A single by Alexa Mahoney put the tying run on third and the winning run on first, and then Mahoney stole second to get into scoring position.
Three Ramettes finished with two RBI: Haylee Zimmerman, Peyton Delhunty and Mahoney. Zimmerman went 1-for-4 with a double, Delhunty went 1-for-4 and Mahoney went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
In the circle, Julie Peterson pitched a complete game, and gave up seven hits and no walks. Of the eight runs allowed, only one was earned, as the Ramettes committed seven errors. She fanned five batters on the day.
Cameron County was led by Taylor Lamont’s 2-for-4 performance, which included a triple. Haley Rees, Alyvia McKimm, Taylor Britton and Ashlea Burgett each had one RBI for the Lady Red Raiders.
Laila Smith pitched a complete game and allowed nine runs on 10 hits and no walks. Only four of the runs were earned, but five errors in the field allowed five more to cross. Smith struck out seven batters.
Port Allegany 6, Oswayo Valley 5
PORT ALLEGANY — Port Allegany escaped with a walk-off 6-5 victory over Oswayo Valley on Thursday in Northern Allegheny League action.
After the Lady Gators (3-5, 3-4) jumped out to a 5-2 lead after four innings, Oswayo Valley (1-8, 1-6) rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to knot things up at 5-5.
Undaunted, the top of Port Allegany’s lineup needed just two batters to walk off with a victory.
Bree Garzel led the inning off with a double, and then Jenna Sprankle singled her home for the 6-5 victory.
“We knew coming into that inning that Bree’s our lead-off, and she’s capable of doing anything,” Port Allegany coach Will Daniels said. “Jenna, being a senior and a good two hitter, she was due, and they both came in the clutch.”
The Lady Gators, which have won three of their last four games, pick up 1-for-3 performance from Sprankle and Jade Evans. Each had an RBI, and Kierra Keck added one RBI and drew two walks during the game.
Oswayo Valley picked up big performances from Karina and Macy West. Karina went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a double, and drove in three RBI. Macy went 2-for-3 with a triple and scored twice for the Lady Green Wave. Karley Carpenter added a 1-for-3 performance with two RBI for Oswayo Valley.
Despite these performances, though, the Oswayo Valley offense left eight runners stranded during the game.
“They definitely hit the ball,” Daniels said of OV. “But we played great defense. We had a few errors, but we got the clutch outs when we needed to, and that happened a few times. It was a great team effort.”
Sophomore Kaylee Boyd turned in a complete game for Port Allegany. She gave up five earned runs on 13 hits and two walks, and struck out three batters.
“That was the best outing out of anybody on our team as far as walks go,” Daniels noted.
